Klezmer Rebs

The Klezmer Rebs are an 8 piece Wellington band playing klezmer music, an engaging style of world/folk music born out of the Yiddish/Jewish culture of eastern Europe in the 1800s and 1900s. Our instrumentation includes clarinet, violin, accordion, guitar, mandolin, keyboards, trumpet, trombone, percussion and vocals.

Our new CD Just add shmaltz – our first full length studio CD with 14 new tracks is called Just add shmaltz and is now (December 2008) available for sale. Listen to one of our new tunes here.  We also have a number of new songs in our live act, so come see us live and enjoy some of our new material as well as old favourites!

The Reb’s first long playing CD Klezmer Rebs Live at the Wellington Folk Festival, was recorded in October 2005 at – you guessed it – the Folk Festival in Wellington (to order click here ). You can listen to some tracks from the live CD here.

In 2008 the Klezmer Rebs played the Parihaka Peace Festival, the TSB Bank New Plymouth Festival of Lights and the Newtown Festival.  We recently hosted a Festival of Jewish Food and Music in Miramar as a fundraiser for Slow Food Aoetaroa with wonderful chef (and fiddle player) Richard Klein, where were joined by the Jews Brothers and the Cafe Klezmer band. Other recent headline gigs we are proud of include: the Festival of the Elements in Porirua (February 2005 and 2006), the Wellington Folk Festival (October 2005 and 2007 ),  Te Papa for the World Music Festival (2006) and the 2006 Wellington Fringe Festival supporting Australian Cantor Alex Stein.  Auckland shows included The Bunker in Devonport (2005) and shows with the Jews Brothers in 2005 and 2006 at Rakinos.
